Lifetime Achievement Award

Peter Fraenkel

This year's lifetime achievement award winner is one of the genuine pioneers of renewable energy technology both in the UK and around the world.

He has enjoyed a hugely varied engineering career, having worked on everything from Zambian copper mines to Scottish marine energy projects. He was one of the founders of the British Wind Energy Association, which this autumn celebrated its 40th anniversary as RenewableUK. He also co-founded Marine Current Turbines, influential international renewable energy consultancy ITPower, and cutting edge energy storage specialist Gravitricity.

Peter recognised the critical importance and huge potential of clean technologies long before they were popular and has dedicated his career to advancing their cause.

As importantly, a colleague has this to say of Peter: "It is very clear to me now that everyone who has worked with him is still enormously fond of him - even those who have disagreed with him on occasion, because when he decides on something he tends to stick to it".

Peter Fraenkel was awarded an MBE for services to marine energy in 2013, has been appointed a visiting professor at the University of Edinburgh, and is a previous winner of the Saltire Prize. But obviously this is the big one. Ladies and Gentleman, our BusinessGreen Technology Awards 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, Peter Fraenkel.

Technology of the Year

Highview Power

Our winner of winners was praised by the judges for its highly innovative energy storage system, successful execution, and ambitious plans to ensure liquid-air energy storage plays a central role in the clean and smart energy grids of the future.
