All the winners and highly commended entries from the fifth annual BusinessGreen Technology Awards

Yesterday BusinessGreen hosted the inaugural BusinessGreen Technology Festival, bringing together 250 clean tech entrpreneurs, investors, and business leaders to explore how to accelerate the development and deployment of the innovative clean technologies that will drive the net zero transition.

It was a fantastic day that culminated in the fifth annual BusinessGreen Technology Awards. Below are all the winners and highly commended entries from the day.

 

App of the Year

OLIO

The judges were hugely impressed with the community focus and intuitive usability of OLIO's food waste-busting app, praising its rapid expansion and demonstrable environmental impacts.

Building Technology of the Year

Accsys - Accoya wood

Accsys won out in this highly competitive category thanks its combination of sustainably sourced timbers and proprietary treatment technology which is playing a key role in advancing the market for carbon negative building materials.

Senergy - Senergy Solar Panels

 

Future City Technology of the Year

Eaton Energy Aware

The judges were hugely impressed with Eaton's technology combining uninterruptable power supplies, lithium ion batteries, and flexible grid services, which together are helping to provide clients with both a value-generating asset and a means to bring more renewables onto the grid. 

 

Circular Economy Technology of the Year


Filamentive - Sustainable 3D printing materials

In one of our most competitive categories, Filamentive won over the judges thanks to its use of plastic waste to create recycled plastics for the fast expanding 3D printing sector, providing a source of sustainable materials for a raft of products, including 3D printed bionic limbs.

Aceleron - Repairable lithium-ion battery

 

International Impact Award

Whitefox - Energy efficient ICM plants

Whitefox emerged victorious once again this year thanks to its continued export success, as its ultra-efficient industrial membrane technology won over more key clients in the critical US market

 

Supply Chain/Logistics Technology of the Year

Halotrade and Project Trado

The Project Trado blockchain-based pilot to track and verify the performance of Malawi's tea supply chain was widely praised by the judges for its combination of technology and business model innovation in a space where the need to shift incentives in favour of sustainable practices has never been more important.

Tried and Supplied - food service search and ordering platform

 

Packaging Innovation of the Year

Envopap Ltd - Envo barrier paper

In another competitive category envoPAP won over the judges thanks to its harnessing of sustainable sugar cane waste to provide a credible alternative to single use plastics that can be used in everything from flower wraps to soup pouches.

First Mile - RecycleBox

 

Transport Technology of the Year

UK Power Networks - Shift V2G smart charging trial

and

Kaluza - The Kaluza Platform

Our first ever joint winner comes in the form of UK Power Networks and Kaluza for their complementary work to demonstrate the viability and attractiveness of cutting edge vehicle to grid smart charging technologies.

Agile Charging - 'plug and play' EV fast charger

Motive Zero Limited - Freight emissions reduction portfolio
 

 

Renewable Energy Technology of the Year

Zeigo - Renewables marketplace

In another highly competitive category Zeigo edged it with the judges thanks to the early success of its renewables marketplace and the key role it is playing in unlocking the potentially huge market for corporate clean power purchase agreements.

Eco Wave Power - Wave energy array

NVPE Technology - Wastewater-to-energy technology

 

Smart Grid Technology of the Year

GridBeyond - GridBeyond Point, intelligent energy technology platform

The judges found it tough to select a winner in another tight category, but in the end GridBeyond edged it thanks to its dynamic Intelligent Energy Technology Platform, intuitive dashboards, and eye-catching case studies showing how its innovations are driving real world cost and carbon savings.

Pivot Power - Energy Superhub

 

R&D Programme of the Year

ZeroAvia

Few clean tech challenges are more complex, nor more important, than delivering zero emission flight. As such, ZeroAvia won over the judges thanks to its HyFlyer project and the huge advances it has made in developing one of the world's first zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell powertrains for light aircraft.

Start-up of the Year

Ripple Energy

The Start-up of the Year category could not have been more competitive and is testament to the huge vibrancy and exceptional entrepreneurialism evident right across the clean tech sector. But in the end Ripple Energy stood out for the judges thanks to its cutting edge business model innovation, impressive technology platform, and inspiring vision to connect consumers with the renewable energy revolution.

Mike Edwards - Meteor Power Limited

Highly Commended:

Philip Keenan - Camscience Ltd

Erik Nygard - Limejump

Mike Edwards of Meteor Power emerged as deserved winner of our coveted Innovator of the Year Award on the back of the launched of his new Motive Zero venture, which is working to expand the company's raft of clean engine innovations further into the transport, aviation, and other sectors.

Mike has been one of the UK's top clean tech innovators for year. He has been Global Head of Technology Strategy for a leading Investment Bank, owner of an international motorcycle racing team, and is now one of the world's leading developers of electric powertrain technologies. He won deserved plaudits from the judges for his restless desire to deliver clean tech breakthrough across a raft of industries, working to enhance designs and powertrains for planes, trains, and automobiles - not to mention wind turbines too.

 

Breakthrough of the Year

C-Capture Ltd - CCUS technology

C-Capture celebrated its 10th anniversary this year, but more importantly it delivered a hugely important breakthrough in the form of a successful trial of its demonstration carbon capture pilot plant at Drax's power station in Yorkshire. The judges were hugely impressed by C-Capture's patented, solvent-based CCUS technology and the potential, following this year's breakthrough, to now scale its approach to capture first 100 tonnes of CO2 a day and then eventually up to 10,000 tonnes, paving the way towards delivering the negative emissions that are going to critical to the emergence of a net zero emission economy.
